Folklore:

Opoponax has been revered as a sacred substance since ancient times, with its use documented in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilisations. The ancient Egyptians included opoponax in their most precious temple incenses and used it in the embalming process, believing it helped the soul's journey to the afterlife. It was one of the ingredients in the legendary Kyphi incense, burned in temples at sunset to honour the gods.

In classical antiquity, opoponax was considered even more valuable than frankincense and myrrh, reserved for the most sacred ceremonies and offerings to the gods. Greek and Roman priests burned it in temples dedicated to Apollo and other solar deities, believing its sweet smoke carried prayers directly to the divine realm. The resin was so precious that it was often given as tribute to kings and emperors.

Medieval grimoires and magical texts frequently mention opoponax as an essential ingredient in high magic, particularly for operations involving angelic contact and divine communion. It was believed that the resin's sweet aroma attracted benevolent spirits whilst repelling malevolent entities. Alchemists valued opoponax for its transformative properties, using it in both physical and spiritual transmutation work.

In traditional Middle Eastern and North African magic, opoponax has long been used to induce prophetic visions and enhance spiritual sight. Mystics and seers would burn the resin before entering trance states, believing it opened the gateway between worlds. The resin's association with the divine feminine made it particularly sacred in goddess worship and lunar magic.
