Folklore:

Mistletoe holds one of the most sacred places in European magical tradition, particularly amongst the ancient Druids who considered it the most holy of all plants. The Druids called mistletoe "all-heal" and believed it was a gift from the gods, sent to earth on a bolt of lightning. They harvested it with golden sickles during the sixth night after the new moon, never allowing it to touch the ground lest it lose its magical power. The plant was so sacred that enemies meeting beneath mistletoe in the forest would lay down their weapons and observe a truce until the next day.

In Norse mythology, mistletoe plays a central role in the death and resurrection of Baldur, the beloved god of light. After Baldur was killed by an arrow made of mistletoe (the only plant that hadn't sworn not to harm him), his mother Frigg declared that mistletoe would never again be used as a weapon. Instead, she decreed that anyone passing beneath it should receive a kiss, transforming the plant from an instrument of death to a symbol of love and reconciliation. This legend gave rise to the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe.

Ancient Greeks and Romans associated mistletoe with fertility and used it in rituals to promote conception and easy childbirth. They hung it in homes to protect against fire, lightning, and disease. Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder documented the Druidic ceremonies surrounding mistletoe and noted its use as a remedy for epilepsy, infertility, and poisoning.

In medieval Europe, mistletoe was hung over doorways and in barns to protect against witchcraft, evil spirits, and lightning strikes. It was believed that mistletoe growing on oak trees (the rarest and most sacred form) held the greatest power. Farmers would give the first mistletoe of the year to the first cow that calved after New Year to protect the entire herd.

British folk magic traditions used mistletoe extensively in love charms and protection spells. A sprig carried in the pocket was said to ensure success in hunting and protect against accidents. Placed under a pillow, it would bring prophetic dreams and visions of one's future spouse. The plant's ability to remain green through winter whilst growing on seemingly dead branches made it a powerful symbol of life, renewal, and the persistence of the soul.

In Hoodoo and American folk magic, mistletoe became valued for its protective and luck-bringing properties. It was carried in mojo bags for protection, added to love sachets, and hung in homes to ward off evil. The berries (though poisonous) were sometimes used in vision work, though extreme caution was always advised.
