Folklore:
Cloves have been treasured for over 2,000 years, originating from the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, once known as the Spice Islands. So valuable were cloves in ancient times that wars were fought over their control, and they were worth more than their weight in gold. The Chinese court required visitors to chew cloves to sweeten their breath before approaching the emperor, a practise that evolved into using cloves in magic to "sweeten" situations and people.

In medieval Europe, cloves were extraordinarily expensive and became symbols of wealth and status. This association with prosperity translated directly into magical practise, with cloves becoming essential ingredients in money-drawing and abundance spells. Merchants would carry cloves to attract customers and ensure successful business dealings. The spice's warming, stimulating properties made it valuable in love magic, particularly for rekindling passion in established relationships.

European folk magic traditions used cloves extensively for protection and banishing. Pomanders—oranges studded with cloves—were carried to ward off plague and evil spirits, a practise that evolved into using them for general protection and prosperity magic. The sharp, penetrating scent of cloves was believed to pierce through negative energies and drive away malevolent forces. Cloves were burned as incense to purify spaces and hung in homes to prevent gossip and protect against the evil eye.

In Hoodoo and American folk magic, cloves became essential in stop gossip spells and protection work. Practitioners would carry cloves to prevent others from speaking ill of them, or use them in spells to silence enemies and stop harmful rumours. The commanding nature of clove's scent made it valuable in compelling and commanding magic, where the practitioner needed to exert influence or control over a situation.

Asian magical traditions, particularly in China and India, recognised cloves as powerful aphrodisiacs and used them in love and attraction magic. The spice's association with the element of fire made it valuable in any magic requiring quick action, passion, or transformation. Cloves were also used in divination practises, with their strong scent believed to open psychic channels and enhance spiritual vision.

In baneful workings, cloves could be used to "stick" curses to targets or to create painful, penetrating hexes. However, their protective properties also made them valuable in reversing such work, with practitioners using cloves to break hexes and send harmful magic back to its source.
