Folklore:
In Chinese tradition, the chrysanthemum is one of the "Four Gentlemen" of flowers, symbolising nobility and endurance. The flower has been cultivated in China for over 3,000 years and is celebrated during the Double Ninth Festival, where it's believed to ward off evil and promote longevity. Ancient Taoists considered chrysanthemum a plant of immortality, and it features prominently in traditional Chinese medicine and spiritual practises.
In Japanese culture, the chrysanthemum holds such sacred status that it serves as the Imperial Seal and appears on the throne. The Festival of Happiness celebrates this revered bloom each autumn. Victorian flower language assigned chrysanthemum meanings of cheerfulness, friendship, and "you're a wonderful friend," though colour variations carried different messages—white for truth and loyal love, red for passionate love, and yellow for slighted love.
European folklore tells of chrysanthemums planted near graves to honour the dead and guide spirits, whilst also protecting the living from malevolent entities. In magical practise, chrysanthemums picked on Michaelmas (29th September) were believed to hold particularly potent protective properties. The flower's association with death and the afterlife made it valuable in necromantic work and communication with the deceased.
In folk magic traditions, chrysanthemums were used in banishing spells, particularly those aimed at removing persistent negative influences or unwanted spiritual attachments. The flowers could be scattered at crossroads to send away harmful energies or burned to cleanse a space of lingering malevolence. Their dual nature—bringing joy to the living whilst honouring the dead—made them powerful allies in both protective and baneful workings.
