Folklore:

Chicory has a long and fascinating history in European folklore and magic. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all valued chicory, with the Romans believing it could purify the blood and liver. In medieval Europe, chicory was associated with frugality and restraint, as the roasted root was used as a coffee substitute by those who couldn't afford expensive imported coffee beans. This association with making do with less translated into magical uses for promoting wise spending and financial discipline.

In Germanic and British folk magic, chicory was believed to possess the power of invisibility and protection. It was said that if one anointed themselves with chicory juice on St. James' Day (July 25th) whilst remaining silent, they could become invisible or at least pass unnoticed by enemies. The plant had to be gathered with a gold knife at noon or midnight on St. James' Day to be most effective. This made chicory valuable for those seeking to avoid detection or escape dangerous situations.

European grimoires and magical texts frequently mention chicory as a herb of favour and influence. It was believed that carrying chicory root would make one more persuasive and help win arguments or legal disputes. Merchants and traders carried chicory to attract customers and ensure successful business dealings. The herb was particularly associated with opening doors—both literal and metaphorical—and removing obstacles that stood in one's path.

In Hoodoo and American folk magic, chicory became an essential ingredient in road-opening work and obstacle-removal spells. Practitioners used chicory root in baths, floor washes, and mojo bags to clear away blockages and create new opportunities. It was particularly valued in court case work, with defendants carrying chicory root to court to win favour with judges and juries. The root was often combined with other herbs in "road opener" formulas designed to remove obstacles to success.

Chicory's bright blue flowers, which open with the sun and close in the afternoon, gave the plant associations with solar magic and clarity of vision. This made it valuable in divination work, particularly for gaining clear insight into future opportunities or hidden obstacles. Seers and fortune-tellers would burn chicory before readings to enhance their psychic abilities and ensure accurate visions.

In traditional European love magic, chicory had a darker reputation. It was believed that if a woman dug up chicory root on Midsummer's Eve whilst naked and in silence, she could use it to make any man fall in love with her. However, this was considered dangerous magic, as the love induced would be obsessive and potentially harmful.
