Folklore:

Caraway has one of the longest documented histories in European folk magic, with archaeological evidence of its use dating back over 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptians placed caraway seeds in tombs, and the Romans used them in love potions and protective charms. The seeds were so valued that they were often used as currency in medieval times.

In Germanic and Slavic traditions, caraway was considered one of the most powerful herbs for preventing theft. It was believed that any object containing caraway seeds could not be stolen, and the seeds were sewn into pockets, hidden in valuables, and placed in barns to protect livestock. Parents would place caraway seeds in their children's pockets or shoes to ensure they wouldn't wander off or be taken by malevolent spirits.

The herb's association with fidelity runs deep in European folklore. In medieval times, caraway was baked into bread and cakes served at weddings to ensure the couple's faithfulness. It was believed that if a person consumed caraway, they would be unable to stray from their beloved. Travellers carried caraway seeds to ensure their safe return home and their partner's faithfulness during their absence.

In British folk magic, caraway was one of the ingredients in "thieves' vinegar," a protective blend used to ward off plague and evil. German folklore held that caraway could prevent lovers from quarrelling and that feeding caraway to pigeons would keep them from leaving their coop—a practice that translated into using the seeds in spells to keep loved ones close to home.
